St. Elizabeth's West Campus :

CGS provided environmental consultation for this GSA redevelopment project. The 176 acre St. Elizabeth’s West campus in Washington, D.C. was chosen as the site for the new Department of Homeland Security headquarters. Upon a review of historical studies, concern was raised regarding potential dioxin contamination in fly ash that was disposed of in a ravine at the site. The team performed a remedial investigation to define the nature and extent of contamination. An assessment was performed to evaluate remedial, institutional and engineering alternatives for addressing the potential risks associated with the planned development. CGS’ assessment included design considerations which included excavation and off-site disposal of 625,000 tons of fly ash. The results of the Human Health Risk Assessment, remedial action and implementation of institutional and engineering controls satisfied regulatory requirements and allowed the site redevelopment to proceed.
